An upmarket pub located in central Chennai, Zara's has carved a niche for itself in the Chennai Pub Scene. A wonderful ambiance, complete with salsa and latin american dance style music welcomes you with both arms! While not a pub in the real sense, this place is better described as a resto bar, specializing in Tapas (Spanish for finger food, or food before drinks, or........you get the picture)
Having been to Spain and having eaten Tapas there, I did not really expect to see 'authenticity' in their food, however, they are as close as the Chennai market would allow them to be! The place is not restricted to tapas and you get a wide variety of main courses too. The bottom line is, authentic or not, this place serves some great food in a wonderful pub ambiance! Music is nice, tables and services wonderful and the crowd, pretty pleasing!
There was a time when 6 of us ordered 18 portions of different tapas and 6 main courses- food is that good and not necessarily heavy! While they serve a lot of Spanish tapas (rather, spanish like tapas), they also cater to the Indian tastes with 'Tapas from around the world that includes Chicken Tikka, so they do not miss out on that market either! Food is priced very reasonably while alcohol is priced at 4 star rates. The 18 tapas dinner which had 3 drinks in total cost us about Rs 5000, which is very very decent!
I am a bad person to comment on the drinks served, but, from what you hear, Zara's is among the best pubs in the city to have your drink! There is no dance floor, but hey, this was not meant to be a disco, anyway!
Overall its a great place to unwind if pubbing is your way to do it! Make sure you wear closed shoes and there are a few women in your group, as they do not encourage 6 men walking in!!! Talk about equality!!!
Food 9/10
Service 7/10
Ambiance 8/10
Price 8/10
Zaras is located on the first floor of the building complex opposite the Chola Sheraton on Cathedral Road, that hosts Hot breads, China Town etc.
